Important Notice - Portuguese Nationality Framework

We would like to inform you of an important upcoming change to the Portuguese nationality framework that may impact eligibility for citizenship.

Under the current legal regime, individuals who have completed 5 years of legal residence in Portugal are eligible to apply for Portuguese nationality. However, a legislative amendment is expected to enter into force in the near future, which will increase the required period of residence to 7 or 10 years, depending on the specific circumstances of each case.

At this stage, the exact date of entry into force has not yet been officially confirmed, although it is anticipated to occur in the coming weeks.

In light of this potential change, it is advisable for individuals who have already met the current 5-year requirement to consider submitting their nationality applications as soon as possible, in order to benefit from the existing legal framework.
